Bio-based Coating
for Paper and Books
Paper and books possess a historical and emotional resonance that is entirely irreplaceable. Yet, without meticulous preservation, these vital records risk becoming havens for hazardous dust and mold. To protect these vessels from the degradation of dust and mold, we develop preservation methods that prioritize human health and environmental safety.
Two-stage process

-
Air-Dry: Allow 2–3 hours at room temperature. Heat-free application.
-
Soak: Fully immerse the book for 5 minutes for total coverage.

Paper samples taken from books were analyzed in the laboratory using an FT-IR spectrometer to evaluate the effects of coating the paper with our antifungal solution containing eugenol extracted from clove.
The FT-IR results show increased signals corresponding to eugenol on the paper surface at wavenumbers of approximately 1700 and 2800 cm⁻¹. In comparison, uncoated paper exhibited only the signals of cellulose, main component of paper. These results confirm the successful deposition of the antifungal agent on the paper surface.
